Kate paints what fascinates her visually from nature. She spends about two hours a day outside, absorbing colours, textures, light and shadow patterns, water movement and forms of rocks or trees. She has an affinity with West Wales and only feels happy painting the land which she feels a connectin with. She feels that without that bond, her paintings do not work. For this reason she never takes commissions.

Kate works mainly in a mixture of acrylics, sennelier oil pastels and St Perersburg water colours. The pastels are very oily and remain sticky for ever, which gives them unusual potential. The paintings are mostly two or three feet in dimension, their size being limited by the need for a large area of glass to cover them.

Kate’s university education began with veterinary medicine in Christs College, Cambridge, where she was their only female student for a year and gained a scholarship. She changed to ’human’ medicine in St Mary’s Hospital, London, then after qualifying, she sought a rural existence working as a G.P. in West Wales in 1986. Her art training has been limited due to medicine and family. She has three teenage boys, they live on an idyllic small holding in the Cambrian Mountains where they have a large orchard, vegetable garden, polytunnels, studio and blue bell woods. Kate’s upbringing encouraged her love of nature and a determination to work hard. She is not sure where the need to paint came from!
